cropped-Joannabiopic.jpgJoanna Caplan (b. April 16, 1984 in Montreal) is a Canadian actress and theatre artist. After graduating from Dawson College’s Professional Theatre Program in 2005 she was hired by Geordie Theatre Company to perform in their cross-Canada tour. In 2009 She graduated with a combined-honors degree from the University of King’s College in Halifax after which she moved to Toronto and performed the leading role inParole Parole at the 2010 Rhubarb Festival at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. In the summer of 2010 she performed the leading role in the original piece The Last First Nations Museum at Toronto’s Summer Works Festival, and created and toured The Girl Who Married a Ghost to Toronto and Montreal. In January 2011 she moved to Massachusetts to begin an acting apprenticeship with the acclaimed Double Edge Theatre company. Over the next 2 years she developed her solo-show Total Verrückt! while based at Double Edge. The piece was workshopped at Double Edge Theatre in June 2012, in Los Angeles as part of the Association of Jewish Theatre Conference in February 2012, and at the Toronto Fringe Festival in July 2011. In 2013 Joanna became a Resident Artist at Double Edge. That same year Total Verrückt! premiered at The Charlestown Working Theater in Boston in May 2013 and had its Canadian premiere at the Island Fringe Festival in Prince Edward Island in August 2013. In addition to these tours, the show has travelled to Detroit, New Orleans and most recently to Baltimore. The piece has garnered critical acclaim and is continuing to book tours nationally and internationally. In addition to her work as a solo-performer Joanna has performed with the Double Edge Ensemble since 2013 in their indoor/outdoor traveling spectacles. Since 2002, Double Edge Theatre has created a highly visual and imaginative performance known that takes place annually on the grounds of the company’s 100-acre Farm and have started touring these site-specific performances nationally and internationally. As a resident artist with Double Edge Theatre since 2013, Joanna led actor training sessions with the dozens of students who come to Double Edge year-round to study their acclaimed actor training methodology. In June of 2016 Joanna left Double Edge and returned to Canada. From September 2016 -June 2017, she will embark on a research trip to India, Nepal and Thailand.
